Sassy Sunflower Half Pack Quilts - Tips and Tricks

Many of our staff members have made shop samples from the Sassy Sunflower Half Pack Quilt patterns, and we wanted to share our best tips and tricks for success!

  • We suggest that you don’t pre-wash fabrics, as any slight fabric shrinkage may make it impossible to complete the pattern as written.
  • Be very careful with cutting - many patterns use every inch of some fabrics!

#Hashtag Pattern

As always, we recommend measuring the center of your quilt to determine your own border lengths. Learn more here. If pieced with perfect ¼” seams, your vertical border lengths should be 56 ½” long and your horizontal border lengths should be 51” wide.

If pieced accurately, the finished size of the quilt top will be 51” wide and 61 ½” tall.

Finishing

If you want to purchase backing + binding fabrics that are the same, you’d need 3 ½ yards of regular width fabric.

Cut two pieces 60” wide, seam them together on a selvage edge.

You can make binding from the left over backing fabric by cutting four 60” x 2 ½” strips (parallel to the fabric selvage).

Because you’re working with triangles and bias edges, we suggest that you lightly starch your fabrics with a product like Best Press before cutting.

If pieced accurately, the finished size of the quilt top will be 48 ½” wide and 59” tall.

Tumble Block

In order to get enough blocks to make the borders, you'll need to be very careful when cutting your fabrics!

Fabrics 1 & 2

Choose fabrics 1 and 2 by their width. These should be the widest fabrics in your kit from selvage to selvage. Cut 2 rows of 3" blocks (12) with the remaining fabric, plus 4 more blocks from under the 6 1/2" x 15" pieces.

Fabrics 3 & 4

Cut 1 row of six 3" blocks with the remaining fabric and 7 more blocks from the yardage under the 6 1/2" x 15" cuts and to the right of the 6 1/2" x 9" cut.

Fabric 5

Cut 4 rows of 3" blocks (24) and then 4 more 3" blocks from under the 6 1/2" x 15" pieces.

Piece the Borders

This will give you a total of 86 blocks. Sew 43 blocks together into a 108" wide strip. This row can be sub-cut into one top/bottom border and one side border.

Repeat for the other 43 blocks.

If pieced accurately, your top and bottom border strips can be cut at 44" wide.

If pieced accurately, your left and right border strips can be cut at 63 1/2" wide.

If pieced accurately, your quilt top will be 49" wide and 63 1/2" tall.

Spin Me Round

Because you’re working with triangles and bias edges, we suggest that you lightly starch your fabrics with a product like Best Press before cutting.

The cutting diagram to the left of diagram C should have an extra horizontal line showing 18 total 6” squares.

We recommend changing the cut length of the long strips of fabrics #3 and #4. The pattern calls for 3” x 14 ½”. When sewn together, this pieced strip finishes at 56 ½”, which is ½” shorter than the quilt top. We suggest cutting the fabric #3 and #4 strips at  3” x 14 ¾”. Once sewn together with the #1 and #2 strips, this pieced strip should equal 57” long.

The finished size of this quilt top should be 49 ½” wide and 57” tall.

Quick Strip

Your finished size before borders should be 43” x 65”.

As always, we recommend measuring the center of your quilt to determine your own border lengths. Learn more here. If pieced with perfect ¼” seams, your left and right border strips should be cut at 65” long. Your top and bottom border strips should be cut at 48” wide.

The finished size of this quilt top should be 48” wide and 70” tall.

Finishing

You may need a little more than 3 yards of backing fabric if you’ll be having this quilt longarm quilted. Check with your longarm quilter regarding how much extra backing fabric they require on each side of the quilt top.

Picnic Basket

If your C or D fabrics are directional, one piece of each will not be cut the same way as the rest.

As always, we recommend measuring the center of your quilt to determine your own border lengths. Learn more here. If pieced with perfect ¼” seams, your left and right border strips should be cut at 55 1/2” long. Your top and bottom border strips should be cut at 49 1/2” wide.

The finished size of this quilt top should be 49 1/2” wide and 60 1/2” tall.

Tippy Tote

In step 5, after making your long patchwork strip, sub-cut it into five 23" strips. As the "Hint" suggests, you do not want the seam lines to match from row to row.

In step 6, we believe that "21-inch sides" should read "23-inch sides".

Choose a fabric from your pack that is 42" wide without selvages to be your outer fabric.
