Sunday, April 25th and Saturday, May 1st - 11:00AM - 5:00PM
Skill level: Adventurous beginner
Carry your sewing tools to your classes in style with this Fancy-Schmancy version of the Sew Sweetness Sheffield Tool Bag! The bag frames hold your bag open wide for easy access while stitching! In this intensive 2-day workshop, you’ll learn exactly how to piece that beautiful diamond pattern and use it on your main panels and strap, how to piece and quilt the “rays” on the side panels, how to make those juicy piped handles, how to install a zipper and a casing (for the bag frame), and how to make a wide guitar-strap style removable/interchangeable bag strap! Deena will
teach you how to do all these things for THIS bag, but the techniques learned can be used on virtually any bag pattern you like!
Each student is required to purchase the Sheffield Tool Bag pattern from Sew Sweetness for themselves (NO SHARING THE PATTERN) and bring a copy of their purchase receipt, their printed copy of the instructions, and the printed/cut out pattern pieces/templates with them to class. It is highly recommended that you print two copies of the pattern pieces that say to“ cut on the fold” and tape them together to form one large and complete pattern piece.
No previous bagmaking experience is required for this class, though some piecing/patchwork experience is helpful (comfort with sewing ¼” seams and things). We’ll go through all the tips and tricks for making structured, durable bags with a home sewing machine and hacks to make almost any bag pattern work with YOUR machine.
You’ll learn about different types of interfacings and foam and why, when, and how to use them as well as where to leave them out to avoid excess bulk.
Please be sure you have all of the items on the tools & supplies list with you for class! Deena will have hardware kits for sale in rainbow and gunmetal shiny black finish (sorry, no mixing and matching of finishes!). She will also bring metallic-look nylon zippers (rainbow and gunmetal black coil) and matching zipper pulls to sell separately (including the beautiful “spool of thread” pulls and sewing machine ones too!) If you would like a different finish for your hardware (e.g.: antique brass, nickel, etc.), you will most likely need to order it online (see supply list), so
please plan accordingly and don’t procrastinate!
You do not have to make your bag rainbow! You’ll find fabric suggestions on the supply list and Cary Quilting will have a selection of ombré/gradient fabrics so you’re sure to find one you love!
** All students must bring their own sewing machines. Some features of your machine that you need to familiarize yourself with ahead of time are:
- How to sew a ¼” seam
- How to adjust the presser foot pressure on your machine
- How to change your needle (This is more of a psychological thing. Needles are not heirloom items! You will change your needle at least 3 times during these workshops!)
Simply add the class to your cart, check out and we'll send your class confirmation and supply list!
If the class shows "Temporarily Out of Stock" and you'd like to be put on the waiting list, please call us at (919) 238-9739.
