How It Works
Welcome back to our 7th Mystery Quilt program, and to a completely new offering - Mystery “Shoebox” Groups! Here’s how it works. Get a project box (ArtBin Super Satchel Single Compartment -15"X14"X3” or similar, is perfect - available online and at craft stores.) Put some fabrics you love in the box, and a set of instructions (Rosi will help you with this part.) Bring your box to the first Swap Meet, find another group member’s box, and take it home to work on. Someone in your group will take your box home and follow your instructions. Every month, we will meet (or you can post photos of your work on our Facebook group) and take a look at the contents of everyone’s box, and then swap boxes. At the end of the project, you will have enough completed blocks in your box to finish a quilt top - and so will everyone else! Your challenge will be to put together a quilt top using the blocks everyone made for you - and again, Rosi will be on hand to help you with this.
Please note: to join one of these groups, you must commit to completing the work each month and returning the project box for the next month. If you cannot attend a meeting, make sure to drop off the project box IN ADVANCE of the next meeting.
Group members will receive a 10% discount at Cary Quilting Company to purchase their project quilt fabrics. Group members will join our exclusive (and secret) 2021 Mystery Quilt Facebook page, where you will find dates for meetings, and where you can post photos, ask for help, and where you can discuss your work with other group members.
How to pick your group.
These groups are NOT designed for brand new quilters. The beginners groups are for quilters who have completed at a minimum 1-2 quilts. The idea is to increase your skills by being challenged. If you have made a couple of quilts, but want to improve your piecing skills, then try the Beginners Piecing Group - “Let’s Get Piecing.” If you have done a little machine appliqué already, but want a challenge, try the Beginners Appliqué Group - “Picture Me This.” For Intermediate and beyond quilters, we have the “Challenge My Piecing” piecing group and “Picture Me In Stitches” appliqué groups, where you could be challenged to make anything!
Rosi is an award-winning quilt designer who started quilting in 1996 when she arrived in Cary and joined a quilting bee. She has designed, organized and run several mystery quilts. Her first was in 2005 - and she loves helping quilters choose their fabrics and learn new techniques. She especially loves how much fun a group mystery quilt project can be.
